Pulwantie Ramjan, the 56-year-old pedestrian of 69 Annandale Railway Embankment who was struck down and killed on Monday evening on the Lusignan Railway Embankment had been on an errand to buy some items to celebrate her upcoming birthday.
The deceased woman’s son, Omkar Ramjan, told Stabroek News yesterday that his mother stopped off at a supermarket in the Lusignan area after doing some domestic work and purchased some birthday items as her birthday was approaching. She was heading back home when the accident occurred.
Omkar who lives at the same address as his mother could not say exactly what happened to her, but was told that she was struck by a motor vehicle while crossing the road.
On another occasion, he heard she was walking at the side of the road when she was struck by the motor vehicle. As such, he is still puzzled about the way she died. He recalled that on the day of the accident, he received a call around 6:45 pm informing of his mother’s death.
The man explained that because they are poor and not being able to access his mother’s money from her bank account due to her sudden death, he decided to agree on a settlement with the driver who pledged to assist with his mother’s funeral arrangements and other expenses.
The police stated that the incident occurred at about 6.15 pm at the Lusignan Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara and involved a motor vehicle with trade plates, KICS 2, driven by a 25-year-old woman of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, and Ramjan.
The pedestrian was flung into the air before falling onto the roadway. Emergency medical technicians were summoned to the scene and Ramjan was pronounced dead.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver showed no trace of alcohol. (Subhana Shiwmangal)
