Guyana’s Harpy Eagles will depart Guyana’s shores today for Trinidad and Tobago where they will look to secure a first Regional 50-over title since 2005 which they won at home.
Ahead of their departure, the side got in some much needed practice in a one-off warm up match on Tuesday, against a select Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) ‘Rest Team’.
In that match, the batsmen got some much needed runs and time at the crease. Currently under the microscope, opening batsman Chandrapaul Hemraj hit an aggressive half-century which will give him a welcome boost ahead of the CG Insurance Super50 competition. Romario Shepherd and Kemol Savory also scored half-centuries while all-rounder Quentin Sampson spanked 49 runs from 20-odd deliveries.
The Harpy Eagles will be looking to their star players, Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, Shimron Hetmyer, Kevin Sinclair, Kevlon Anderson, skipper Veerasammy Permaul and Ronsford Beaton to put in good performances and aid them in their push for success in the 50-over format. Additionally, in a surprise move, young pacer Shamar Joseph was added to the squad, late yesterday evening to further buff the squad’s potential according to the GCB.
GCB’s President, Bissoondyal Singh, also paid a courtesy call to the team yesterday, wishing them well before they depart today.
Guyana will head into action on October 17, against the Windward Islands Volcanoes at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba. The CG Insurance Super50, which is the region’s premier List A 50-over tournament, will conclude on November 11. This year sees a new eight-team league format followed by Semi-Finals and Finals to determine the Champions.
