Ugwagboe dispatches Birkett as national junior badminton c/ships serve off

Jedidiah Uwagboe defeated Shane Birkett in sets of 21-5 and 21-13 in the opening boys U19 singles event as the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) served off its national junior tournament at the National Gymnasium Thursday night.

The tournament, sponsored by the National Sports Commission saw some 32 matches played on the opening night.

Action will continue with action in the Under 11, 15, and 19 categories in singles, doubles and mixed doubles formats. 

The tournament has attracted children from many schools around Georgetown and some from as far as Berbice.

Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle was present at the opening ceremony and gave brief remarks where he urged the participants to have fun and wished them well.

He also served off the first shuttle to officially open the tournament. 

The GBA also did its bit in raising awareness for Breast Cancer month and celebrated Pinktober by asking participants to wear pink.
