The Georgetown Cricket Club’s men and women’s teams continued their dominance of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) first-division leagues which continued at the Providence National Stadium yesterday.

The Bounty GCC men had a close match against Saints men but held on to run out 2-1 winners. GCC started out with a bang and needed just two minutes to find the back of the net, Frederick Kush finishing off a sweeping team move to make it 1-0. After conceding though, Saints showed good composure and returned pressure in the midfield.

However they could not find an answer and halftime saw the score remaining at 1-0 in favor of GCC.

However, just after the resumption of the game, the ever dependable Shakeem Fausette equalized for Saints in the 32nd minute.

That goal made for an intriguing second half as both teams sought the winning goal, however, veteran Dwayne Scott handed GCC their second straight win with his second straight clutch goal netting in the  43rd minute.

Saints, by then under heavy offensive pressure, conceded a penalty corner which Scott duly converted on behalf of the victors.

Meanwhile on the distaff side of things, the GBTI/GCC ladies had a straight forward 2-0 win over the Woodpecker Hikers.

Goals on either side of halftime secured another three points for the GCC women. First, Latoya Fordyce ended a period of sustained attacks with a calmly taken field goal from the left side of the goal area to sweep GCC in front. A midfield stalemate saw the rest of the half go goalless. After the halftime break, Fordyce again got the breakthrough to make it 2-0 in the 42nd minute. Her goal would be the last action either goalies saw as the game petered out tamely to end 2-0 in favor of GCC.

In the other two games of the day, YMCA Old Fort came from behind to beat Pepsi Hikers 2-1. The Hikers scored a field goal through Robert France in 13th minute to forge ahead but crumbled defensively and conceded two goals on either side of the halftime whistle. Shaquon Favorite and Warren Williams were on target for the victors.

The Saints women got the ball rolling with a 2-1 win over their YMCA Old Fort counterparts. Kalyra Scott and Nyanna Chase netted for Saints while Tamala Glen scored the lone goal for the losers.

The tournament continues on Sunday at the same venue from noon.
