The regional one-day cricket championship begins today in Trinidad.
Since the inaugural tournament sponsored by the Gillette Company in 1976 only four players could boast of scoring a century on their regional one-day debut.
First to achieve this historical feat was the Barbados middle order batsman Terrence Hunte.
Hunte rescued Barbados with a stylish 114 against Guyana at the (Mecca) Kensington Oval during their Geddes Grant/Harrison Line sponsored clash in 1985.
One week later Leeward Islands Edward Lewis, younger brother of Enoch Lewis made a spectacular regional one-day debut with a pugnacious 145 not out at the (MECCA) Kensington Oval 1985.
Thirteen years later in 1998 Leeward Islands Wilden Cornwall joined the debut list when he hammered Minnows USA with a murderous 126 at Kensington Park in Jamaica 1998.
Guyanese Royston Crandon was the talk of St George’s capital of Grenada when he destroyed the Windward Islands with a commanding 101 on his regional one-day debut in 2006.
Let’s see if anyone in this year’s tournament will be added to the historical list above.
Of the four mentioned above only Crandon went on to represent the West Indies at the one-day international level.
