In the build up to the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club’s (GMR&SC) international circuit racing event, the E-Net sponsored ‘Caribbean Clash-of-Champions’ event billed for November 5 at the South Dakota Circuit, the entity is promising a spectacle never before seen on Guyana’s shores.
At a press conference yesterday evening at the GMR&SC headquarters, President Mahendra Boodhoo briefed the media on the developments on and off track ahead of the highly anticipated showdown.
Boodhoo revealed that amongst the countries that will be competing on the day are Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada and the USA along with the Guyanese contingent.
Bikers from the United Kingdom and around the Caribbean as well as the USA will also be in action against their Guyanese counterparts.
In a nod to the event’s sponsors, Boodhoo stated; “We must be thankful to our corporate partners, for the overwhelming support from the sponsors and government. Motor sport is in a good place for development”.
Meanwhile, in a change of logistics in terms of the duration of the event, Boodhoo revealed; “We have seen fans liking the idea of shorter events so we are working diligently to shorten our events. We will start at 11am. We want to shorten our event to make it more attractive so that the fans could have a good time”.
With the track recently receiving an upgrade in terms of size and being able to hold a greater number of cars, fans will be able to see up to three races (various classes) simultaneously run off, an unprecedented development. Additionally, safety measures will be at an all-time high with the spectators in mind.
In terms of ticket sales, Boodhoo noted that the GMR&SC will mostly be catering for pre-sales with the locations of authorized ticket sellers to be verified in the coming days.
In brief remarks, Guyana’s top drivers, Kevin Jeffrey, Mark Vieira and Vishok Persaud, shared similar sentiments, with expectations of close races and high octane entertainment due to the old rivalries which will undoubtedly be reignited among the Caribbean’s top group four racers.
As CEO of E-Net, the title sponsor of the event, Vishok Persaud (E-Net) explained; “At E-Net we have been impressed with the plans that we have seen from GRMSC. Guyana has been known as the Mecca of motor racing in the Caribbean and this event will prove it”.
He also announced that the company has partnered with biker Matthew Vieira, which announcement will be made on Friday.
Speaking on behalf of the Super Bike category, local lad, Kevin Persaud, said that he expects the starting grid to be bigger than ever before with 21 riders already registered from the US, UK , Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Guyana.
“We will have a huge turnout and we hope that we provide quality entertainment. Team Mohamed Riders will be participating as well but we hope that a Guyanese can take it home,” he declared.
The “Clash-of-Champions” will see the return of some of the most famous racers in Caribbean motorsport in action on Guyanese soil.
Thus far, Barbados champion Mark Maloney, Jamaica’s Doug Gore and Trinidad’s Franklyn Boodram have all been confirmed to participate.
