Yesterday morning, Police ranks conducted a ‘Stop-and-Search’ exercise along the Ituni Trail, during which several vehicles were stopped and searched.
While in the vicinity of 25 KM, at approximately 07:35hrs, one of the ranks stopped a motor lorry #GAC 7594, with trailer #TMM 3007, which was transporting logs and was proceeding West on the Ituni Trail.
As the rank (an Inspector) was approaching the lorry, he saw the driver Danieram Persaud, a 23-year-old truck driver from Diamond, East Bank Demerara, throw a suspected single-barrel shotgun through the left side window of the lorry into the nearby bushes (the truck is a left-hand drive).
The Inspector immediately retrieved the suspected firearm and showed it to the suspect. Persaud was asked if he was a licensed firearm holder, and he said “No”. He was then told of the offence committed and cautioned. Under caution, the suspect said, “Officer, I find this gun and I decide to keep it”.
The firearm was checked, but no ammunition was found in the chamber. The suspect was arrested and escorted to MacKenzie Police Station, where the suspected firearm was photographed, marked, sealed and lodged.
