Boxer Joel Williamson suffered a unanimous points loss in his bout when fistic action at this year’s Pan American Games continued yesterday in Santiago, Chile.
Fighting out of the red corner, the southpaw lost via a 0-5 decision to Miguel De La Cruz of the Dominican Republic in their 63.5kg, round of 16 bout.
The five judges scorecards read, 29-28, 30-26 and 30-27×3, all in favor of the 28-year- old De La Cruz.
Williamson, 27, along with Alesha Jackman (66kg), Emmanuel Pompey (92kg) and Desmond Amsterdam (80kg) all lost their respective opening bouts at the multi-sport Games which got underway on Thursday.
Guyana’s hope for a medal in the fistic sport now rests on the shoulders of Keevin Allicock who progressed to today’s 57kg quarter final after a second round stoppage of Panama’s Javier Ibarguen on Thursday.
Allicock, a Tokyo2020 Olympian, is scheduled to face Jahmal Harvey of the USA from 16:45hrs.
The top two boxers in each division will qualify for the Olympic Games next year in Paris, France.
Clive Atwell secured Guyana’s last Pan Am Games medal in the fistic sport at the 2007 edition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when he won bronze in the 54kg segment.
Twenty athletes are representing Guyana across the disciplines of Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Swimming, Weight Lifting, Electronic Sports (Esports) and Track and Field.
