Ravens, the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans and Eagles basketball teams secured contrasting wins when the inaugural edition of the “One Guyana” Basketball Premier League continued on Saturday night at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
Ravens dismissed Pacesetters 60-41. Ryan Stephney, Tyrone Hamid, and Shamar Huntley tallied 13, 12, and 11 points, respectively, in the win.
Adding seven points each were Jude Corlett and Dominic Vicente. For the losing team Nathan Saul scored 14 points while Randy Richardson added nine.
Meanwhile, the UG Trojans schooled Rising Stars 81-31. Kadeem Peterkin scored 18 points with Daniel Benjamin and Jushawn Bailey the next best scorers with 14 and 12 points respectively. Alroy Nurse added 10 points. For the losing team, Devon Murray scored nine points and Shaquan Archer eight.
Similarly, Eagles crushed Sonics 87–45. Michael Richards led the rout with 26 points while Denzil Ross, Travis Belgrave, Kwesi Ross and Sherland Gillis scored 18, 15, 15, and 11 points, respectively. For the Sonics, J. Lovell top scored with 10 points while Joel Schultz added eight points.
The tournament, which is a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport (MCY&S) and G-Boats Incorporated, is being run by the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation. It forms part of the National Sports Academy and features 14 teams divided into two zones, which are the Harpy Eagles and Jaguars Conferences, respectively. The first-place prize is $1,000,000, while the runner-up prize is $500,000.
