Gold miner Kurt Smith, 45, appeared before Magistrate Rhondel Weever at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with robbing a woman of over $1m and was remanded to prison after a not guilty plea.

It is alleged that on October 16, Smith of Lot 66 D’Urban Street, Georgetown, while on Water Street in Georgetown, robbed Onessa Thorne of one million dollars and a black purse valued at ten thousand dollars.

Smith entered a plea of not guilty to the charge. The prosecution vehemently objected to bail being granted, stating that their investigation revealed discrepancies in the address provided by Smith. They discovered that he does not actually reside at Lot 66 D’Urban Street but instead at Lot 234 Crane Housing Scheme.

In defence, Smith’s legal team argued that he does indeed live at Lot 66 D’Urban Street, countering the prosecution’s claim that Smith had provided misleading information to the police.

The prosecution further opposed bail, asserting that the money stolen by Smith had been used to make purchases. Magistrate Weever, considering these arguments, refused to grant bail, and Smith was remanded to prison until his next court appearance scheduled for November 20, 2023.
