As the police continue their investigation into the murder of 21-year-old businessman, Amit Singh, the force says that an extension has been granted by the court to hold the alleged mastermind in custody beyond 72 hours.
This was confirmed by Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who in an interview yesterday noted that an application was made to the court for an extension and it was granted.
Blanhum also noted that a post-mortem examination will be conducted next week.
The Guyana Police Force had reported that Singh was lured on Tuesday by four suspects to a house at Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown by claiming they were in possession of gold for sale.
Whilst at the house, the four men allegedly brutally murdered Singh and wrapped his body in a sheet. They then took the cash that the victim had taken to purchase the gold and locked the building with the body inside.
Investigators later arrested Yogeendra Sukhdeo, a ‘close friend’, who later confessed to the crime.
On Wednesday morning, Sukhdeo took police to his home at Lot 1896 20th Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, where a search was carried out in his room and the sum of $7,791,000 in $5,000 bills was discovered.
During that day, police also indicated that they managed to track down the three other ‘suspects’. However, the trio denied their involvement in the murder and said they are only employees of Sukhdeo.
Additionally, they all gave an account as to where they were at the time of the murder and investigators are currently making efforts to confirm or reject their alibis.
