Carrol Lynette Skeete, a 62-year-old woman whose 105 Temple Street, Goed Fortuin Housing Scheme home was completely destroyed by a fire that was said to have been started by a fluctuating electricity supply is seeking help from the government to rebuild.
The fire occurred on September 26 at her two-storey wooden and concrete home while she was on vacation overseas.
Skeete was unable to say what time the fire started but while she was away, she was informed by neighbours that her home was on fire. She relayed that she couldn’t say what the cost of her losses was but noted that some money she had in her home was burnt along with every other items as her home was well furnished.
The woman said she had purchased some items with the little money she had saved in her bank account so the contractor can start to rebuild, but she still has to purchase more items and cannot do so since everything is costly now and she’s out of money. She disclosed that she was in the process of setting up her own business when her home was destroyed by the fire.
“When I got money to do the little business, everything burnt up in the fire. I had a little savings in the bank and I draw it out to start doing back my home. Money done. I didn’t even get back bed, chair nothing. I’m staying by my friend right now.”
She added that she was told that “…the fire happened when the electricity came on back after a power outage. Soon as electricity came back, persons heard an explosion and the fire started. She lamented that all the contents in her home were destroyed.
Also, the contractor working on rebuilding her home is, “calling fuh a set of money, I had to pay the man Wednesday. The building materials are costly.” She had already purchased blocks, cement, sand and other items but still need more building materials to rebuild her home.
As such, Skeete is calling for assistance from the government. “I would really like if the government can help me with rebuilding my home.”
