Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Andre Ally on Friday undertook an inspection of the ongoing $1.7b construction project at the New Amsterdam Prison.
A release from the Ministry said that Ally’s visit covered ten distinct lots, collectively representing an investment of $1.7 billion.
Among the inspected lots, notable advancements were observed in Lots 2, 4, and 5, the release said.
Under Lot 2, construction of the male and female living quarters has commenced with the demolition of existing structures and site preparation. The release said that 15 percent has been completed.
Under Lot 4, reconstruction of the Officer’s Sports Club has started with the demolition of existing structures. This aspect is at 10 percent completion.
Under Lot 5, construction of the Reception Building, which has a budget of over $413 million, construction has begun with the demolition of existing structures and has reached 12 percent completion.
The release said that the Permanent Secretary’s visit also shed light on the forthcoming phases. Lot 1, which involves the construction of Senior Officers’ Living Quarters, is in the mobilisation phase, preparing for imminent work commencement. Lots 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 are also in the mobilisation stage.
Lot 3 covers the construction of the kitchen and a storage bond, while Lots 6, 7, 8, and 9 encompass the infirmary annex, an overhead storage tank, a treatment plant, reconstruction of solitary and cell blocks among others.
Ally also inspected the Guyana Police Force IT Training Complex and the Rose Hall Police Station.
In Fort Wellington Region 5, another ministry release said that Ally was briefed on the progress of the IT Training Complex. With a budget surpassing $80 million, it is at 82 percent completion.
In Region 6, the newly constructed Rose Hall Police Station is at an advanced stage – 95 percent practical completion, according to the release.
At a cost of over $70m, the station’s facilities include a community relations room, a case management system, a dedicated traffic department, and a state-of-the-art criminal investigation department.
During his visit, the release said that Ally expressed his satisfaction with the progress, underlining the importance of these developments in fortifying the region’s security infrastructure.
