In the only match yesterday at the Providence National Stadium, defending champions of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) Farfan & Mendes Men’s first division league, Bounty GCC, needed only one goal to ensure that they gave themselves a chance to retain their title.
Coming up against second-placed YMCA Old Fort in a qualifier where the winner would automatically head to the final, Bounty GCC scored the game’s only goal in the 12th minute of the first half. Dwayne Scott, a veteran of the Bourda-based club, would convert a penalty corner to put his team 1-0 up, a position from which they never moved.
Despite the loss, Old Fort, who managed to finish second in the points standings of the league stage of the tournament, will have another bite at the cherry, as they will face the winner of Saints versus Pepsi Hikers for a final spot.
The knockout stage of the tournament continues on Saturday (November 4) at the same venue. This time it will be action in the Woodpecker Products Women’s League with third placed Woodpecker Hikers taking on YMCA Old Fort ladies in the eliminator. The winner of that match will face the loser of the GBTI GCC versus Saints game.
