Roy Jaglall—one of the two men who had been accused of murdering fisherman, Mukesh Mangra back in 2020—has been acquitted of the charge.
Following hours of deliberations yesterday afternoon, a jury found Jaglall not guilty of committing the offence.
While the panel was unanimous in its finding on the first count for the capital offence; it returned a majority verdict in the proportion of 10-2 on the lesser count of manslaughter.
Following the announcement of the verdicts, Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall who presided over the trial at the High Court in Demerara, informed Jaglall that he was discharged and was therefore free to go.
Earlier, this month, Jaglall’s co-accused, Vivekanand Ramroop, pleaded guilty to killing Mangra.
At his arraignment, he admitted that he, on January 18th, 2020 murdered Mangra.
Ramroop is currently awaiting sentencing, which has been set for November 9th.
Jaglall was represented by defence attorney Dominick Bess.
Meanwhile, the State was represented by prosecutors Caressa Henry, Delon Fraser and Rbina Christmas.
The body of Mangra called ‘Paul”, 27, of Coldingen Squatting Area, ECD was discovered on the evening of January 18, 2020 with multiple stab wounds and lacerations about his body.
Family members had told Stabroek News that they believed that Mangra was attacked and killed during a robbery.
