According to Kirk ‘Chow Pow’ Jardine fathers are under attack. That statement was made on his Facebook page hours after he left the lock-up where he was held for allegedly publicly assaulting his daughter physically.
For me it is unclear why this comedian and entertainer has not been cancelled. Guyanese were up in arms about a man named Majah Hype who said that Guyana was geographically not part of the Caribbean and was just accepted in the region. That anger was real (and maybe rightly so), but yet there is support for Jardine, who has been before the court, and has also supported a father who abused his daughter.
It was alleged that Jardine assaulted his daughter on October 27, 2023, on the Ruimveldt Public Road. The 57-year-old pleaded not guilty and was granted $50,000 bail. The prosecution stated that Jardine inflicted several slaps and blows to his daughter. Concern was expressed that the defendant could potentially interfere with or harm the complainant, justifying his detention for the preservation of public order.
Jardine was granted bail and has since been posting on Facebook, basically justifying his alleged actions.
According to him his “mistake” was being too emotional as he was “…overcome with a lot of things, and I am only human. But wah I could tell you all I am no abuser,” he said in one video.
This man stands accused of physically abusing his 22-year-old daughter. In addition, he was previously charged with throwing his stepdaughter’s clothes on the ground and his lawyer had said at the time that he was unable to establish a good relationship with any of his stepchildren.
“I am innocent and Allah is going to prove, it is going to shine so bright it is going to blind you,” he told his viewers in one of his videos and then the tears came, but he said they were tears of joy.
“Nobody knows what parents going through… especially fathers,” he said.“I am going to hold firm with me wife. We ain’t going to go no way, we will be in your faces and be together.”
One hopes that his wife gives the same support to her daughter.
Jardine was one the most public supporters of businessman Devanand Singh, who was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment earlier this year for inflicting grievous bodily harm on his daughter and using threatening language.
Singh was caught on camera assaulting his 25-year-old daughter. In April last year, the man was charged with the two offences after that video was shared on Facebook. In the footage, Singh could be seen slapping, cuffing and kicking the complainant. At one point, he pushed her and kicked her into what appeared to be clothes racks in his store. A firearm could be seen tucked in his waistband. The victim’s brother eventually intervened but this did not stop the man from trying to continue assaulting her.
That video was particularly hard to watch and in his public comments at no point did Jardine express sympathy for the young woman; all his support was for the father.
Meanwhile, in a live video on November 1, Jardine said, “… people keeping their eyes glued to my story and trying to use all kinds of derogatory remarks. I ain really focusing on that because that is dealt with and there is only the end result to come.” Part of the latter remark was said with jeering laughter.
“You guys are allowed to do that. You guys are humans as well so hit as hard as you want, if you think you are helping the cause or by hitting please hit, if you want to be satirical, please do it,” he encouraged.
Continuing to laugh, he said that when he hits back and he hits hard, but cautioned, “… remember now is nah me alone, is an entire family you guys are shaking up against and trying to peddle this nonsense”.
Is the alleged physical abuse of his daughter the nonsense he referred to?
But as he rightly said in that video the “world continues to go on” and “night continues to turn to day” and he will not run away as he goes “through things” he will be a better person. One can only hope he is referring here to his idea of parenting.
He said he believes something positive will come out of this. My only wish is that the positive ‘something’ is that his daughter gets past this with as little damage as possible. According to him, one of the best things is that his entire family is supporting him.
“I keep saying that a man does not get up in the morning to go beat his wife just so. You gah look at the situation. But I don’t mind. You see, world court, the public court which is Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, whatever, you guys know everything. You guys don’t need help with anything, you guys know everything,” he said at one point.
It appears that what Jardine does not know is that there is no “situation” that justifies any man beating his wife, or his children.
According to him, he and family have already started the healing process and they don’t have to wait on the court system. He added that he was happy that people were going to him with their shoulders and he was going to lean on the shoulders provided. Oh the pity party!
Alluding to the fact that he is a recovering drug addict, he said he follows a programme that says to him a power greater than oneself could restore one to sanity. For him there are angels in human form to help others and if one does not manage to identify them then they will miss the help.
According to him a form of disciplining calls, “for real tough love at times”.
He also went off on a tangent about how no mistake a man make should be enough to kill him and referred to his support of the businessman who was jailed for the horrific abuse of his daughter. He questioned whether those who are now supporting him will also be condemned.
His jeering laughter throughout the almost one hour video made it hard to watch and listen to the end.
This man is just a horrible human being, no other way to say it and I cannot comprehend how people find him funny and actually pay money to go and watch his acts.
He made previous videos as well addressing the issue and in one of them, according to him, his life is in Allah’s hand and he prays he will continue to strengthen him. He said he could not “display” what happened but he will “…allow you guys to enjoy yourself, have a party, knock two glass…” until the truth comes out. According to him, Allah knows his innocence and the difference with him and “…a lot of people is, I have Allah and I trust him…”. He mentioned sleeping for three nights on the concrete, presumably at the police station.
But then again he said the police at Ruimveldt Police Station treated him with the utmost respect and placed his well-being on the front burner.
“They actually saved my life on two occasions while I was there. They did not deny me anything, not only me, the other inmates as well,” he said.
I pray the police treat abuse victims with the utmost respect as well.
Regardless of what the court decides, Chow Pow should be cancelled based on everything he has said and claims to stand for. Nevertheless, I hope that he is held fully accountable for his actions. As for his daughter I pray she gets the help she needs and at least half of the support her father now claims he is receiving.
