The Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) first division men and women’s leagues continued over the weekend at the Providence National Stadium, East Bank Demerara with Saints men defeating Pepsi Hikers on Sunday in the Farfan & Mendes men’s league eliminator.
Finishing third and fourth in the league stage, the meeting between Saints and Hikers, meant that the loser will take no further part in the action while the winner faces YMCA Old Fort in the semi-final.
The winner of that match will clash with the Bounty GCC men’s outfit.
Saints, led by a brace from Edmond Chinian and a solitary strike from Quin Tobin, relegated Old Fort to a 1-3 defeat. Chinian put his side ahead with a field goal in the 14th minute while Tobin doubled the lead in the 19th minute with a deflected shot past the Old Fort custodian.
Shane Samuels found a response in the 46th minute to give the Hikers side a sliver of hope, but that was quelled when Chinian made it 3-1 in the 55th minute.
The GBTI/GCC ladies were also in action Sunday, getting the better of their Saints counterparts with a 2-1 victory. Goals from Abosaide Cadogan and Alyssa Xavier in the 22nd and 33rd minute respectively, saw GBTI/GCC holding a comfortable lead. The Saints team had a late response to try and salvage some pride when Eleesha Henry found the back of the net in the 59th minute but the goal was a little too late. The win means the GBTI/GCC women have confirmed a spot in the final of the Woodpecker Products Women’s league. Saints will have another attempt to reach the final, when they play the Woodpecker Hikers next weekend. Meanwhile, the Woodpecker Hikers women faced YMCA Old Fort on Saturday and promptly thrashed them 6-0 to move on to a semi-final encounter against Saints.
Nicolette Fernandes netted a hat-trick and received support from Trinity Greaves, Maria Munroe and Tunza Sarabbo who chipped in with a goal apiece.
The league will continue over the upcoming weekend at the same venue.
