The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has listed their team of athletes that will be representing Guyana at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) in Paramaribo, Suriname, from November 17–19.
The team is made up of young and fresh faces in the pool, but despite their lack of experience, the team manager of the swimming contingent, Peter Sookram, is highly confident that the athletes will defend their swimming championship, which was won last year on home soil.
Speaking to Stabroek News Sports, Sookram broke down the selection process: “The team was selected from previous meets over the last few months, and we took the best swimmers with the best times to make up the team of 16, eight males and eight females”.
This time around, the team has swimmers as young as 12, with Jessica Sookram being the youngest.
Sookram maintained his confidence, saying, “We won last year, and I’m optimistic that this year again we’ll do extremely well. We have a lot of new swimmers heading into the IGG for the first time, but overall, I know they’re going to give us a good show. I have confidence in them bringing home lots of medals and even winning them again, even though we’re heading into a different territory. I know we are going to come out victorious this year as well”.
Swimming is among the eight disciplines that will be contested; the others are chess, futsal, football, lawn tennis, basketball, volleyball, and athletics.
Two disciplines, table tennis and badminton, have been removed from the initial list of 10 following a request from the hosts.
