Contracts signed for rehabilitation of roads in Region Ten

The Government of Guyana continued its national buildout plan with the signing of contracts worth some $842 million on Friday for the rehabilitation of roads in Region Ten, a Ministry of Public Works release has said.

According to the release, the contracts signed were to the tune of $842,393,353 for the rehabilitation of 19 miscellaneous roads.These were listed as: 1) Block 22 Main Road, Wismar; 2) Ice Water Road, Block 22, Wismar; 3) Broad Money Street, Amelia’s Ward; 4) Community Centre North Side Road, Amelia’s Ward; 5) Henry’s Road, South Amelia’s Ward; 6) Well Road, Amelia’s Ward; 7) Lover’s Lane and School Access Road, Amelia’s Ward; 8) Second Corner, Main Street; 9) Empire Drive Road; 10) Last Cross Street, Empire Drive; 11) Blueberry Hill Back Road; 12) Oval Road, Retrieve, Linden; 13) Harvey’s Road, One Mile Extension; 14) Bobby Nowel’s Street, One Mile, Linden; 15) Riverside Road, Watooka, Linden; 16) West Watooka Hill Top, Linden; 17) West Watooka Internal Road, Linden; 18) Half Mile Road, Wismar; and 19) Green Valley Road, Wismar. These projects have a three-month duration.

The release noted that Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill has urged the contractors to immediately get into execution mode.  Edghill disclosed that just recently, an instruction was given by President Irfaan Ali to pave 1,000 metres of roadway in Coomacka, along with another 1,600 metres at Old England/Siberia. These roads are currently at crusher run level, and according to the minister, must be brought up to asphaltic concrete.  Additionally, he stated that there is work to be done at Ituni, and four concrete roads, as well as a new road to be constructed at Black Bush for which the contract will be awarded immediately.

The minister also informed that along with another $300 million earmarked for projects under the hinterland programme for Region Ten, “there is work and opportunity for everyone.”  He added, “Like every other region of the country, Region Ten is experiencing a massive infrastructural overhaul in keeping with the government’s national buildout plan.”
