Dear Editor,
I wish to commend the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha for yet another display of cultural extravaganza. It was indeed a magnificent spectacle to watch the motorcade as it made its way to the LBI community centre, East Coast Demerara.
Those of us who are familiar with the history of the birth of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha in 1974 would know that it was formed after the then Burnham regime attempted to take control of the Guyana Maha Sabha. It took the courage and determination of the late Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud and other like-minded members of the organization to thwart such attempts to divide the Hindu community. A similar attempt was made to divide the Muslim community by wresting control of the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman which was led by the late Yacoob Ally.
The formation of the Guyana United Dharmic Sabha can be seen as a triumph of light over darkness. The Dharmic Sabha is today the largest Hindu organization in the country. It is significant that the organization is now led by the daughter of the late Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud, Dr. Vindya Persaud who from all indication is doing a great job in promoting the Hindu culture. If I am not mistaken, the Diwali motorcade was the brainchild of the late Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud. Congratulations to the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year.
Sincerely,
Hydar Ally
