Police yesterday said a 56-year-old man allegedly took his life by hanging at the Providence Police Station hours after he was arrested based on a report of sexual assault of a minor made by his wife.
His death is now being investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
According to a release from the police Lloyd David, of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was arrested by the police and placed into the lockup following a damning report made against him by his 32-year-old wife. The release said the woman had visited the station and police later escorted her home, where they arrested David based on her allegations, including alleged attempted rape of a minor.
The man was booked and placed into custody, where he joined two other persons in the lockups. He later reportedly assaulted one of the arrested persons, who had to be sent for medical attention. Due to his violent behaviour, the release said David was then placed in a separate cell by himself. However, about half an hour later the person in the neighbouring cell shouted that he had committed suicide.
He had reportedly torn the jersey he was wearing, tied it to the lockup cell door and hung himself.
Police found him hanging and an EMT personnel were summoned and they found that David had no pulse, after which he was pronounced dead. No other marks of violence were seen on the exposed parts of his body.
