The third edition of the Hikers Hockey Club’s Mixed 7-a-side Hockey Festival saw the Jai Signs sponsored team win their second title since the competition’s introduction to the hockey fraternity.
Played at the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) ground on Monday, team Jai Signs played newcomers Giftbox by Gigi and eased to a 2-0 win in the final of the tournament. Jabez Walters netted in the 14th minute while Randy Hope doubled the score for Jai Signs just three minutes later, enough for their team to lift the championship trophy.
Meanwhile, Giftbox settled for silver and despite their loss, the Most Valuable Player accolade went to Lennox Carrol from the runner-up. Captain of the champions, Kareem McKenzie walked away with the Best Keeper/Defender award. The accolades and incentives were made possible by Mother’s Kitchen, C Mobile and LeZo Logistics.
The tournament which began in brilliant sunshine early on Monday, saw the participation of nine teams which were split into two groups. Group A saw Jai Signs, German’s, Giftbox by Gigi, Coles and iNet in action while Group B consisted of Dyrock, Muse, Sensodyne and Brand It.
The top three teams from each group would move on to the play-off stage; Jai Signs were prolific in the group stage dispatching iNet 1-0, Coles 3-0, Giftbox 2-1 while suffering their lone loss against Germans, that result being 1-2.
In the play-offs, the eventual winners would book their final spot with a 4-1 win over Sensodyne while Giftbox by Gigi’s path included a 1-1 draw and subsequent penalty shootout win over Muse and 3-2 wins over German’s and Sensodyne.
The tournament which saw sponsors adopting a team, was powered by Demerara Mutual, Guinness, Trophy Stall, Jai Signs, iNet, Giftbox by Gigi, Coles Printing, Sensodyne, Muse Hookah Bar, German’s Restaurant, Dyrock Construction and Brand It.
