A Williamsburg Village, Corentyne man died after the motor lorry he was returning home in slammed into another lorry along the Foulis Public Road, West Coast Berbice on Tuesday afternoon.
Dead is 34-year-old Renold Chattian.
The accident which happened just around 4 pm involved motor lorry GZZ 2733 which was being driven by Mohamed Shakar of Tain Village, Corentyne, and motor lorry GTT 9027 owned by Industrial Fabrications of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara and driven by Roopan Singh of Ocean View, Uitvlugt.
Motor lorry GZZ 2733 had four occupants which included the now deceased man.
According to the police, motor lorry GTT 9027 was heading west when the driver noticed thick smoke across the Foulis Public Road blowing north to south. He reportedly told police that he slowed down due to poor visibility, however while driving through the smoke he felt a sudden impact at the rear of his lorry.
At that stage, he applied brakes and noticed that lorry GZZ 2733 had slammed into the rear of his vehicle.
As a result of the impact, Chattian and the other occupants who were seated in the cab sustained injuries.
They were all rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where Chattian was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver and other occupants were treated for their injuries sustained but were not admitted.
Shakar after receiving treatment was placed in custody and taken to the Weldaad Police Station. The police reported that a breathalyzer test was done, however, no trace of alcohol was found. An investigation has been launched into the accident.
