President Irfaan Ali says there is a publicly televised genocide taking place in Gaza which has been under attack by the Israeli army for weeks following a terrorist attack by Hamas that killed hundreds of Israeli civilians.
In the weeks that have followed the Israeli army has besieged Gaza and health authorities their raised their death toll on Friday to more than 12,000, including 5,000 children. The United Nations deems those figures credible, though they are now updated infrequently due to the difficulty of collecting information.
Israel’s indiscriminate bombing of Gaza has attracted widespread condemnation.
Speaking at a press conference today at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Ali said that that he condemned Hamas’ terrorism but Israel in response is undertaking genocidal actions.
“For me, this is the first publicly televised genocide in the world…this is televised genocide”, the President declared.
He said that Guyana has a very strong position on terrorism. “We condemn the actions of Hamas”, Ali declared.
“But what is occurring now is nothing short of being a genocide. We call (for) an immediate ceasefire or humanitarian aid to be able to (go into) Palestine. We call for a two-state solution and for all parties to return to the negotiating table”, he said.
