On Saturday, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai distributed 285 solar photovoltaic systems to villages of Monkey Mountain and Taruka in Region Eight.
According to a press release from the Department of Public Information (DPI), at Taruka, 35 households received their panels and several projects funded by the ministry were commissioned. In Monkey Mountain, 250 households were beneficiaries of the solar panel programme. Additionally, a $2 million women’s sewing group centre and a $3 million multipurpose building were commissioned. The community also benefited from a $1.9 million all-terrain vehicle, the release said. A tractor and trailer provided by the government was also delivered to the village.
The minister, during her visit, the release said, addressed several issues relating to education, agriculture and health and misinformation peddled by the Amerindian People’s Association (APA).
According to the DPI press release, it was a commitment being fulfilled to the Amerindian villagers.
