Traditional powerhouses Colts, Ravens, and Kwakwani recorded lopsided victories when the ‘One Guyana’ Basketball Championship continued on Saturday evening at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The wins by the aforesaid trio were recorded by margins greater than 20 points. Colts dismantled Rising Stars 85-47. O’Quacey Short recorded 21 points, while Shelroy Thomas and Domitri Rankin tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively. Adding eight points was Troy Morrison. On the other side, Shemar Savory scored 10 points, while Shaquan Archer scored eight points.
Similarly, Kwakwani humbled Mambas 80-57. Domair Gladstone led the rout with 29 points, while Jamal Gilkes supported it with 21 points. For the loser, Brandon Bento tallied 19 points, with Judah Stephney the next-best scorer with seven points.
Likewise, Ravens crushed the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 70-37. Shamar Huntley scored the most with 19 points, with Omar Walton being the next-best scorer with 17 points. Adding 14 points was Ryan Stephney. For the loser, Quincy Wright tallied 21 points, while Rondel Edwards and Devon Fraser added 10 and eight points, respectively.
The tournament, which is a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport (MCY&S) and G-Boats Incorporated, is being run by the Guyana Basketball Federation. It forms part of the National Sports Academy and features 14 teams divided into two zones, which are the Harpy Eagles and Jaguars Conferences, respectively.
A minimum of 56 fixtures and a maximum of 63 matches are projected for the competition, which concludes in March 2024. The winner of the tournament, which will be played every Saturday at the same venue, will pocket $1,000,000, while the loser will receive $500,000.
