Amid rising tensions  over Venezuela’s planned referendum on December 3rd, Commander for Regional Police Division #1, Senior Superintendent Himnauth Sawh and Regional Chairman  Brentnol Ashley, along with a team of Police and Regional officials, held an Outreach in Yarakita Village, North West District on Saturday.

A release from the police said that the intervention was necessary to address key issues and concerns that residents had relating to the Guyana and Venezuela border controversy.

The Regional Chairman said that the Government of Guyana has always maintained, and continues to maintain a peaceful approach to the situation, thereby respecting the boundaries of both countries and allowing the matter to be addressed by the International Court of Justice.

He assured the residents that the Government is prepared to defend every part of Guyana and that there was no need to panic or be affected by malicious persons spreading fear and confusion.

Sawh thanked the residents for their courage and enjoined them to maintain their confidence in the Police Force, the Army and other stakeholders with responsibility for the safety and security of the Region, and by extension, Guyana.

Further, the Commander appealed to the villagers to only rely on information provided and disseminated by official and designated sources of the country’s authorized entities such as the Department of Public Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Security Forces or State releases, as against social media and other unauthorized channels which can promote misinformation.
