The Opposition has expressed its disapproval at what it sees as the failure of the government to adequately address the fears and concerns of Guyanese, especially Essequibians stemming from Vene-zuela’s claim to Essequibo.
A statement yesterday from the Office of the Opposition Leader noted that it has observed “with deep concern, the unsettling wave of social media commentary permeating our society, leaving the Guyanese people in a state of unease.” It concluded that this “glaring” absence of decisive action from the government in addressing these concerns raises questions about its commitment to bringing comfort and instilling confidence among the citizens, particularly those residing in Essequibo.
The Opposition posited that it was “disheartening” to witness what it described as the “apparent inertia” in response to the anxieties stemming from Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo territory. However, in the midst of its criticism, the Opposition reiterated its “unwavering commitment” to collaborative efforts with the government, while emphasising the need for unity in addressing these pressing matters. “We stand ready to actively participate in any initiative aimed at fostering peace and ensuring genuine confidence among our Guyanese brethren, as we patiently await the ruling of the International Court of Justice”, it said.
The statement disclosed that the Opposition was in receipt of numerous reports from Guyanese within the Essequibo region, highlighting a “disconcerting silence” from the government regarding their concerns. It described this state of affairs as not only “lamentable,” but also an affront to the principles of open and good governance and public accountability.
In light of its aforementioned concerns, the Opposition is “urgently” calling upon the government to move beyond “mere rhetoric” and demonstrate, through tangible actions, a genuine commitment to addressing the concerns of the people. It charged that the safety and comfort of every Guyanese citizen, especially those in Essequibo, must be paramount, and as such, implored the government to redouble its efforts, engage with the Opposition and populace, and assuage the fears expressed by concerned citizens.
The statement also challenged the government to engage in leadership while assuring of its readiness to collaborate. “Now, more than ever, is the time for decisive leadership and proactive measures to reassure the Guyanese people that their voices are heard, their concerns are acknowledged, and their well-being is a top priority. The Opposition stands as a willing partner in this endeavour, ready to collaborate for the greater good of our nation”, it said.
