The Ministry of Housing today encouraged anyone with “solid evidence” of corruption to come forward and report it immediately to the Guyana Police Force, the ministers in the ministry or the permanent secretary.
In a press release, the Housing Ministry said it had been brought to its attention that there are a number of allegations on social media about corrupt activities by certain employees related to housing matters.
“The Ministry is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and service in the exercise of our mandate in the housing sector and we take these allegations with utmost seriousness.
“We encourage anyone with solid evidence of such corrupt activities to come forward and report it immediately…”, the release said.
It warned that any employee who is found to be engaging in corrupt transactions “will face serious disciplinary action and also the full force of the law, where appropriate”.
Furthermore, the ministry said that it has intensified monitoring of the activities in the areas highlighted in the allegations to ensure that all procedures are strictly followed.
The release reminded members of the public that all applications for house lots are processed directly at the Ministry of Housing and its regional offices by authorised employees. The ministry added that it does not have “any middlemen or external agents who are authorised to conduct business on its behalf”,
The housing sector interfaces with multilateral financial institutions, various countries and the private sector and would therefore be concerned about allegations of corruption.
