A Parika woman is now a patient at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) after four of her fingers were severed in a cutlass attack that was allegedly carried out by her reputed husband at around 6:30 am yesterday. It is reported that her husband is in custody.
Hospitalised is Cherriel Fredricks, a 48-year-old housewife of Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo. Investigations revealed that Fredricks and her common-law partner, Michael McClennon, a 43-year-old farmer of Parika Backdam (Conservancy) had a misunderstanding about three weeks ago that led to Fredricks leaving their Morasi, East Bank Essequibo home to stay with her sister who resides at Parika Backdam.
At around 6 yesterday morning, the husband was working in the area at Parika Backdam and went over to his wife’s sister place and pleaded with her to return home with the intention of fixing things between them. However, Fredricks was reluctant to leave and the husband responded by holding on to his wife hand in an attempt to pull her out of the yard. To prevent this from happening, the woman struck the man in the head with a ‘belna’ (rolling pin).
The woman’s daughter then intervened with a cutlass, but unfortunately, the husband took it away from her and used it to chop his wife on her left hand, injuring her. He then tried to escape, and dispose of the cutlass by throwing it in a nearby trench, but instead was captured by neighbours and tied up.
Meanwhile Fredricks was rushed to Leonora Cottage Hospital and later transferred to the WDRH where she remains hospitalised. Her husband was taken to the Parika Police Station.
