Dear Editor,
It is several weeks since the infamous prisoner release. At the time it was stated based on calculations the prisoner was released. This, it was subsequently found to be erroneous and the prisoner was returned to complete the sentence. An investigation was promised. Was this completed? If so, what are the findings?
The crime committed by the prisoner was heinous, and there can be no argument there. However, it is posited, a grave injustice was meted out to her, through no fault of hers. She did not break out or escape from prison. She was thought to have been legally released by the authorities, later found to be unlawful. Even prisoners have rights.
Does this matter, given the circumstances of the release, freedom tasted then snatched away, warrants some consideration from the state? Is the state absolved by the return of the prisoner to complete the sentence?
Sincerely,
Shamshun Mohamed
