Mixed Martial Artist (MMA) Corwin D’Anjou captured the lightweight amateur championship on the Caribbean Ultimate Fist Fighting (CUFF) 18 fight card, prevailing via a stunning knockout on Saturday evening at the Eastern Regional Sporting Complex, Tacarigua, Trinidad and Tobago.
D’Anjou, who is the captain of Guyana’s MMA team and is signed to Fight Central locally, claimed his first regional title on his return to the international circuit by stopping Canadian Nicholas Araujo in the first round of bouts via a technical knockout following a ground and pound sequence.
D’Anjou, in a post-match comment, said, “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Gavin and Michael Singh for their unwavering support in my journey. Your contributions to the sport of MMA have been invaluable. I appreciate the encouragement and belief you’ve instilled in me. To my wife and daughter, thank you for being my pillars of strength. Your unwavering support is my driving force.
I told you that once I’m zoned in, I become the machine that people fear. Defeating an international opponent and claiming a world title is not just my victory; it’s ours, a testament to the power of family. This triumph is a shared achievement, and I look forward to continuing this journey together.”
Meanwhile, Gavin Singh, President of the Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation, applauded D’Anjou’s historic feat, noting that it is a significant episode or instance for the country, which could serve as a catalyst for the growth and advancement of the sport locally and within the region.
He further opined that the victory emphasises the potential that can be realised for Guyana in the discipline, noting,
“This victory is not just a personal triumph for D’Anjou but a collective win for Guyana, contributing to the elevation of the sport on the global stage.”
The event does not fall under the umbrella of the Caribbean Mixed Martial Arts Federation.
