A Jibb, Region Two family is not convinced that their relative Kumar Narine aka Kevin died from drowning and is calling for justice.
On November, 16, 2023 Narine of Lot 29 Jibb Village, Region Two was discovered floating in the Port Kaituma River in Region One. The police are treating the case as a drowning, however Narine’s relatives believed that he was struck in the head and then dumped into the river.
A post-mortem examination conducted on November 20, 2023 concluded that Narine died from blunt trauma to the head and compression injuries to the neck due to drowning.
Mother of the deceased Tajwattie Sookraj said that she was uneasy as her son’s body was buried in a shallow grave and then exhumed for the post-mortem examination. She said that the family suspected foul play in her son’s death. She said that when the body was taken out from the river it was not swollen and she was disappointed at the way the Port Kaituma mortuary handled the body. “I can’t understand how they allow[ed] my son’s body to decompose. He has no one there and we were hoping to see my son and give him a decent funeral, imagine they just buried him then took him out again, I am so disappointed and I want justice” Sookraj said.
Sookraj also related that Narine was her eldest son and was supposed to return home in December to celebrate his birthday with his family and be with his wife who is pregnant with their first child. “I believe[d] they wanted to get rid of my son’s body so they hurry and bury he claiming that he was decomposing, how can the [funeral] parlour authorities allow that?” the mother questioned. The mother believed that her son was murdered and then dumped into the river. She said that the police questioned three males who were later released. The mother said that she is currently living in Region Two and it is very expensive to go to Port Kaituma to have an investigation launched.
Narine’s mother is seeking financial assistance as she is desirous of pursuing legal advice on the matter. The tearful mother said that she last saw her son in January.
