The technical bench of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has revealed the final 12-man squad that will represent the nation at the Grenada 7s which kicks off on Friday.
Led by Head Coach, Claudius Butts, the technical bench has retained Captain Jamal Angus, Vice Captain Vallon Adams, USA-based Tyrese Prescod, Godfrey Broomes, Lionel Holder and Jonathan Garnett who has replaced the injured Owen Adonis.
There are six new faces on the team with Sean Phillips, Kelvin Grant, Akino James, Scott Garraway, Leon Cole and Ronaldo Niles making the cut.
The prestigious tournament which kicks off in the capital of the ‘Spice Isle’ in three days, has attracted teams from the UK, USA, Canada, and the Caribbean.
It is the longest running Club Rugby 7s tournament in the region and has returned to Grenada for its second year. Eighteen of the world’s best Men’s and Women’s Elite 7s teams will compete in the two-day tournament for a US $20,000 total prize pool.
The local players will also be aiming to spring upsets and cash in on the incentives.
According to President of the union, Ryan Dey, the outfit, affectionately called the ‘Green Machine’, will look to transform into robot mode and ‘surprise’ their rivals.
“This is a young squad with loads of potential” said Dey. “They will surprise everyone in the Caribbean with their skills and talents individually and as a team. We have speed on the wings and a lot of creative players in the middle like Godfrey and Captain Angus”, Dey added. (Emmerson Campbell)
