Romarion Wolfe, Michael Mohamed, Akeela Webster, Joel Trim, Navindra Carpen, and Athaleyah Hinckson recorded gold medal performances in their respective field events when the 61st edition of the National Schools’ Cycling and Track and Field Championships continued yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Wolfe smashed the boys’ U-14 high jump record, recording 1.66m to beat the previous mark held by current West Indies Academy player Isai Thorne of District 15 (New Amsterdam/Canje), who jumped at 1.63m.
In a similar vein, though unofficially, the Boys U-12 discuss saw Mohamed of home turf, District 3 (West Demerara), throw his way to a new record of 24.04m, two metres better than the previous mark set by Jamie Fraser’s (District 5) of 22.23m.
On the distaff side, District 3’s Webster made her mark on the discus range with a best of 21.14m to capture gold in the girls’ U-14 event to overshadow Anna Headley’s 20.47m.
Meanwhile, Joel Trim of District 2 (Essequibo Coast/Pomeroon) captured gold in the boys U-20 javelin with a distance of 49.21m. Securing the silver medal was District 15’s (New Amsterdam/Canje) Dellon Durant (43.64m), while District 3’s (West Demerara) Randolph Beharry claimed bronze. (38.44m).
In a triumphant return, district 12’s (East Georgetown) Carpen copped the gold medal in the boys U-16 long jump after previously having three foul attempts in last year’s ‘Nationals’. He credited his improvement to his coach and stated that he would also be looking for gold in the triple jump and high jump events.
In the same age category, albeit on the distaff side, Hinckson, also of district 12, improved last year’s finish of fourth to a gold medal performance this year.
In the teacher’s first event of the ‘Nationals’, District 2’s (Essequibo Coast/Pomeroon) Azizi Christiani took top honours in the under-21 male teachers discus event in his first outing with a best throw of 29.22m.
Also in action on day one of the track and field championships, spectators were treated to rousing action in the 400-metre heats.
Among the well-known athletes who contested those heats were Tianna Springer and Javon Roberts, who did little to nothing to ease into the finals set for Friday.
Roberts recorded 50.87 in his U-18 race, while Springer registered 54.89 in her outing. Similarly, Kester DeSouza of District 3 won his heats in the Boys U-8 400M.
