Twenty-five-year-old Horace Thomside appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was charged with simple larceny.
It is alleged that on November 24, while in Georgetown, he stole one Taurus .38 pistol valued $125,000 and five live rounds of ammunition all belonging to Professional Guard Service, a security company.
The court heard that on the day in question at about 7:00 am, a driver employed with the security firm was tasked with delivering firearms at various locations to its security officers.
It was only after the driver had completed his deliveries that it was noticed that the aforementioned firearm and ammunition were missing.
The matter was reported to the police and Thomside was subsequently arrested and questioned. While under caution he admitted to stealing the firearm and directed police to his home where the firearm was found under his bed.
During the proceedings, Thomside’s family revealed that he suffers with mental illness.
The magistrate proceeded to grant bail at $150,000 with the condition that he attends GPH along with the probation officer and a family member to receive help.
The magistrate also indicated her reluctance at having him put in prison since, in her view, the prison service is not equipped to handle mentally ill inmates.
The prosecutor also requested to have Thomside report to the Kitty Police Station every fortnight commencing this Friday.
The matter was adjourned to January 17, 2024, for disclosure of the probation report.
