Twenty-one-year-old Leon Garraway of Lot 69 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Leron Daly charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.
It is alleged that on November 25, while on Norton Street, Lodge, he discharged a loaded .32 pistol at his female companion.
The prosecution told the court that on the day in question the complainant, her friend, and the accused, were at the friend’s home preparing to leave to go to an event when Garrway pulled out the pistol, pointed it in the victim’s direction and discharged a round which hit her in her left arm.
The matter was reported to the police and Garraway was arrested. He then took police to the spot where he had left the firearm and while under caution, admitted to the offence.
Garraway’s defence counsel told the court that his client was not at the home when the incident occurred and further, the complainant was the one who had taken the police to the spot where the gun was hidden. During his application for bail, he stated that his client was never in possession of, or discharged any firearm and when he learnt of what occurred with the complainant, he took her to the Campbellville Health Centre and that was where he was arrested and taken into police custody.
The prosecutor objected to bail and informed the magistrate that Garrway is also to be placed before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court over similar matters.
As such, the magistrate refused bail.
The matter has been adjourned to January 19, 2024.
