The national men’s rugby team experienced mixed fortunes in their three matches when the Grenada 7s kicked off yesterday at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in St. George’s.
In their opening Pool A encounter, the unit dubbed the ‘Guyana Jaguars’, were held scoreless versus the Atlantis USA going down 0-29. The outfit worked out their wrinkles in the second game, winning 20-12 against TT Defence Force.
In their final match, the local ruggers were defeated 29-5 versus the Misfits.
Today the ‘Jags’ will continue their campaign versus FRN an English team from 11:40hrs.
In an invited comment, head of the rugby union and manager on the sojourn, Ryan Dey stated that he was proud of the competitive nature of the players.
“Seeing that we played the two best teams in the tournament and held our own, that was commendable. Especially for this team that has six new players that has never played at such a level to hold their own, I am very proud.”
Dey added “The guys played well but were not able to execute everything that was taught by the Coach (Claudius Butts), especially in the opening game, but they got most of it right in the second one.”
The Grenada 7s has attracted teams from the UK, USA, Canada, and the Caribbean.
It is the longest running Club Rugby 7s tournament in the region and has returned to the ‘Spice Isle’ for its second year.
Eighteen of the world’s best Men’s and Women’s Elite 7s teams will compete in the two-day tournament for a US $20,000 total prize pool.
