UG says not served with any documents on alleged defamation suit by Forde

The University of Guyana (UG) says that it has not been served with any documents in a purported defamation lawsuit against it by Dr Wayne Forde.

A statement yesterday from UG was responding to a letter in Saturday’s edition of Stabroek News by Forde where he stated that UG had been named as a defendant in legal proceedings that commenced in Guyana’s High Court requesting damages of over $7,000,000 for defamation allegedly  committed by the defendants on June 25, 2023.

“Dr. Forde, over the last two days, has enjoined two newspapers in perpetuating a gross untruth in the public domain by publishing an unsubstantiated Letter to the Editor December 2 (Stabroek News)and December 3 (Village Voice) stating that the University is a defendant in a lawsuit for defamation”, the university said.

As of yesterday, UG said that neither it nor its lawyers has been served by any Court with any documents relating to a defamation suit from Dr Wayne Forde.

“However, should any such document arrive at any point in the future, the University would hope the matter is addressed urgently by the Courts since the University has no intention to, and in fact, not wronged this person in any way at any time.

“It is regrettable that the nation’s attention should be directed to such a scurrilous and frivolous personal matter at this difficult time in our country’s history by media outlets who may now have unwittingly enjoined themselves in the legal case by publishing Forde’s letters on the matter without validation and fair comment from the University”, UG said.

It added that it remained committed to justice and fair play and should any legal actions ensue would expect to be totally vindicated in court.
