“The tournament in all was good, and it was a good start for this sevens programme that we have embarked on; it’s only up from here.”
So said President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Ryan Dey, yesterday following Guyana’s participation in the Grenada 7s.
The Grenada 7s were staged this past weekend in the capital of the ‘Spice Isle’ at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium and attracted teams from the USA, Canada, the UK, and the Caribbean Region.
During the tournament, the local ruggers, dubbed the ‘Guyana Jaguars’, finished sixth with two wins (20-14 vs. TT Defence Force and 26-0 vs. FRN Men) and three losses (0-29 and 5-26 vs. Misfits and 17-19 vs. Maroons) in their five matches.
In summarising the sojourn, Dey said, “I would call it a baptism of fire for a team where half of the players have never played in an international tournament before. The first day was okay, but we did not get the results we wanted by losing two games to the two teams that were in the finals.”
Dey added, “I would say the guys held their own, and on the second day they played much better after getting the butterflies out of the way the day before.”
The union head then thanked the Guyana Olympic Association and the Ministry of Sport for their unwavering support “in building this process.”
