Jonathan Bailey, a 27-year-old driver from Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke-Linden Highway was yesterday charged with causing death by dangerous driving and placed on $1.6m bail.
Bailey is accused of causing the death of pedestrian Vishnudat Ramlan, a 52-year-old resident of Kuru Kururu. Bailey pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, a release from the police said.
Meanwhile, another driver involved in the accident was charged with being an unlicensed driver.
The police said that Steffy Timmerman, a 27-year-old female of Kuru Kururu was charged with being an unlicensed driver and breach of insurance. She pleaded guilty before Magistrate Latchman and was fined $75,000.
The matter was adjourned for court on 28th December 2023, at 1 pm.
Police say the accident occurred at about 18:15 hours on Saturday, and involved motor car PJJ 807, owned and driven by Bailey and motor car PMM 2014, owned and driven by Timmerman.
Enquiries disclosed that motor car PMM 2014 was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the highway. It was alleged by the driver that she observed a male in the centre of her lane. On seeing the man, she pulled north but her right side wing mirror struck the pedestrian. Motor car PJJ 807 was also proceeding in the same direction but at a fast rate, and in his attempt to overtake motor car PMM 2014, also struck the pedestrian.
As a result, the pedestrian suffered injuries to his head and body. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
