Yesterday at the Commission’s Secretariat on Croal Street, the National Commission on Disability launched the National Week of Persons with Disabilities and Balloon Releasing event.
A release from the Ministry of Health said that the week of activities aims to raise awareness for persons living with disabilities and commemorate the National Day of Disability which was observed on December 3rd, under the theme, “United in action to rescue and achieve the sustainable development goals for, with, and by persons with disabilities.”
Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, while commending the newly appointed commission for their work thus far, stated that the Ministry has embarked on a programme providing hearing aids and spectacles free of cost to those in need.
He added that the Ministry is working on providing prosthetic legs free of cost.
“The workshop that we have at Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre has been providing a lot of help to persons who need that type of help. We’ve been able to make prostheses for people, and this has assisted them with their mobility. We’re hoping shortly that all prostheses that we will be able to offer would be free of cost, and this is something we’ve been working on”, the Minister said.
Present at yesterday’s event were the Chairperson of the National Commission on Disability, Ganesh Singh; Foreign Service Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sharmayne Balram; Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Disability, Beverly Pile; and other staff members from the National Commission on Disability.
