After bursting on to the track and field scene last year, Tianna Springer has already cemented herself as Guyana’s premier junior athlete in any discipline.
Her local and international hardware boasts loudly and speaks volumes of the pedigree of the star sprinter.
Her meteoric rise on the track has been unmatched with several historic performances already under her belt.
The CARIFTA Games and South American U-20 Championships 400m gold medalist and record holder reminded the nation of her special talents last week when she earned an unprecedented six gold medals at this year’s ‘Nationals’.
Springer showed her versatility by winning the Girls U-18 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m races. All but the 800m race ended in meet record time. The Chase Academy standout was also instrumental in leading her team to gold medals in the 4x400m and 4x100m relay events.
Prior to ‘Nationals’ she took her talents to Suriname and dominated her rivals during the Inter Guiana Games (IGG).
The track prodigy has been flawless locally and internationally as she continues to sprint to the top podium step in each of her international duties.
At just 16, Springer is no doubt a special sprinter full of promise and potential that once steered in the right direction can continue to bring Guyana glory, perhaps even at the pinnacle of the sport, the Olympic Games.
The CARIFTA Games has birthed the likes of Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Ato Bolton, Shericka Jackson, Shauna Miller-Uibo, just to name a few, all of whom went on to medal at Olympic Games and World Championships.
Springer has the mental fortitude and the talent to be the ‘next big thing’ out of the Region.
Following Paris 2024, there will be the XXXIV Olympiad in Los Angeles in 2028. Springer will be 21 then and could perhaps be making her Olympic debut.
Having already qualified for the World Junior Championships, and capping this season with six gold medals and several records under her belt, the talented teen and her coaches will no doubt be looking to continue the upward trajectory on the local and international circuits in 2024.
