The police issued the following press release last night:

Former Guyanese and West Indian cricketer Clyde Butts lost his life in a vehicular accident at Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) this afternoon.
The accident occurred at around 15:15 hrs this afternoon (Friday 8th December 2023) at the junction of Eccles Industrial Site Road and First Access Road (West of the roundabout on the Southern side of Eccles Industrial Site Road).
The accident involved motor lorry GAC 7592, owned and driven by Lloyd Gunraj, a 41-year-old of Bartica; motor van GAE 8844, driven by Christopher Comacho, a 22-year-old of Lamaha and Waterloo Street, Georgetown; and motor car PTT 66, driven by Clyde Butts, the 66-year-old cricketer of Lot 1655 Plot B Herstelling, EBD.
Enquiries disclosed that the lorry was proceeding West along the southern drive lane of Eccles Industrial Site Road when it was alleged by the driver that on the approach to the First Access Road, he saw motor car PTT 66 proceeding North along the Access road.
The lorry driver said Butts failed to stop and proceeded on Eccles Industrial Site Road and ended up into his path. On seeing thIs, the lorry driver said he pulled onto the northern drive lane to avoid a collision but despite his efforts the front of the lorry collided with the center portion of the car and pushed it onto the northern carriageway causing it to further collide with motor van GAE 8844 which was proceeding East along the southern drive lane.
As a result of the collision, all three of the vehicles received damage and the driver of the motor car (Butts) received injuries. He was taken out of the car by the emergency medical technicians (EMT), placed in an Ambulance and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead on arrival.
Notices of intended prosecution were served on the drivers, both of whom are in custody assisting with the investigation.
