Dear Editor,
It is with a heavy heart that I express on behalf of the Councillors, Staff, Citizens of Georgetown, my family and I, our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the GDF servicemen who tragically lost their lives in the helicopter crash on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. This devastating incident has deeply impacted our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this terrible loss, especially the family members of Guyana Defence Force- Brigadier Gary Beaton, Colonel Michael Shahoud, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles, Lieutenant Colonel Sean Welcome and Staff Sergeant Jason Khan.
The bravery and dedication of these servicemen will never be forgotten. They made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country, and we are forever grateful for their selfless commitment to protecting our nation. Their contributions to the defense and security of our beloved Guyana will always be remembered with honour and respect. As we mourn the loss of these courageous individuals, let us come together as a community to support one another during this difficult time. Let us extend our unwavering support to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen servicemen, offering them comfort and strength as they navigate through this profound grief.
I urge all citizens to join me in honouring the memory of these brave servicemen and expressing our gratitude for their service. Let us pay tribute to their legacy by upholding the values they stood for and by continuing to uphold the safety and security of our City and Guyana by extension. May we find solace in each other’s compassion and may the memories of these heroic individuals inspire us to strive for a better, more united community. I would also like extend my best wishes for a full and successful recovery to the two survivors of the accident − Lieutenant Andio Crawford and Corporal Dwayne Jackson – whom made it through with injuries in the crash.
Sincerely,
Alfred Mentore
Mayor of Georgetown
