The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) has announced that its flagship National Senior Championship, which was scheduled to be hosted last Sunday, will be held this Sunday instead.
The postponement of the event, which will be staged at the St. Stanislaus College auditorium, was due to the fact that last Sunday was declared a National Day of Prayer following the horrific helicopter crash that claimed the lives of five servicemen.
The federation released a statement saying that it joined the nation on that day of sorrow, grieving the deaths of the members of the Guyana Defence Force who perished.
“The nation has lost five dedicated patriots who lived and worked for the protection of our collective freedom. In light of the President’s declaration that Sunday, December 10, 2023, be considered a National Day of Prayer, the federation has postponed its Senior National Competition previously scheduled for the same date.”
The release further stated that “the GAPLF extends our deepest sympathies and unwavering support to the family, friends, relatives, and comrades of the deceased. We wish you peace, comfort, and courage at this time of bereavement. May their courageous souls enjoy a peaceful and eternal rest.”
When the event is staged at 9:00am this Sunday, top lifters like Carlos Petterson-Grifith and Keisha Abrigo will chalk up and perform.
