Residents of Hyde Park, Timehri, on the East Bank of Demerara have for months been experiencing issues with their potable water supply.
During a visit to Hyde Park on December 6, Stabroek News spoke to several residents about the cost of living and how it’s affecting them prompting one resident to express his dissatisfaction about being without water for months and further complain about the discoloured water when it finally flows once per week. To add insult to injury, the resident stated that his water bill has increased despite not receiving water like he should.
Lawrence Torres, a 56-year-old businessman told this newspaper that besides being affected by the high cost of living, the people in the area are experiencing serious issues in relation to water supply. He explained that persons are not getting water for months and when the water finally comes, which is about once a week, it is red in colour. Torres noted that the residents in the area are suffering when it comes to water but chose not to say anything about it.
He recommended that government officials visit the area and investigate the situation since GWI when contacted by residents hasn’t done anything about the problem.
When asked about his water bill. Torres responded, “I still have to pay the water bill every month. One month I paid $1,500, the next month I’m paying $2,000 even though I don’t receive water like how I should. “
When Stabroek News contacted GWI yesterday, a representative who wished for her name not to be mentioned, informed this newspaper that she will provide an update today as the utility is currently addressing the matter.
