Following a visit this week by retired four star US general, Wesley K Clark, government says that no decision has yet been made on hiring him in any capacity.
“We had a good meeting with General Clark. There has been no formal decision as to whether he will be hired or not but he is a solid person,” Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday said when asked by Stabroek News about the meeting with Clark.
Government is impressed with Clark’s experience, according to Jagdeo, who pointed to operations he undertook for NATO and SOUTHCOM.
Clark met on Tuesday with President Irfaan Ali, Jagdeo, and Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Omar Khan, at State House. Sources told Stabroek News that Clark is on a private visit at the invitation of President Ali.
A brief statement from the Office of the President said that discussions focused on hemispheric security and geopolitical relations within the western hemisphere.
Clark serves as chairman and chief executive officer of Wesley K. Clark & Associates, a strategic consulting firm; chairman and founder of Enverra Inc, a licensed investment bank; and chairman of Energy Security Partners. Clark, who retired as a four star general after thirty eight years in the United States Army, is said to be active in energy, including oil and gas, biofuels, electric power and batteries, finance, and security. In his final assignment as supreme allied commander, Europe, he led NATO forces to victory in Operation Allied Force, a 78-day air campaign against Serbia to protect Albanians from ethnic cleansing.
