Woodlands Hospital yesterday announced the passing of Dr Neville Gobin. He was 75.
In a statement, Woodlands Limited said “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Dr Neville Gobin who dedicated his life to his patients and his family.
“He served as the Managing Director of Woodlands for over three decades, where he worked tirelessly to ensure that patients visiting the hospital were provided with the best possible care”, it said.
Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony also lauded his legacy.
“Dr Gobin’s leadership at Woodlands Hospital was transformative. Serving as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for the majority of his tenure, he successfully propelled the hospital from a small private facility to one of the leading medical institutions in the Caribbean. His commitment to innovation was evident in the introduction of pioneering medical services, including the first comprehensive ultrasound service, ultrasound-guided surgery, MRI, CT scan, and the first fully automated laboratory in Guyana.
“Dr. Gobin was a trailblazer in the medical field. He performed numerous surgical interventions for gynaecological cancers. In early 2023, he introduced Guyana’s first stem cell therapy for patients, which marked a significant milestone in the country’s medical landscape. On the occasion of the launch of this pioneering programme he received encouragement from H.E. President Irfaan Ali.
“Dr. Gobin’s impact extended far beyond the confines of Woodlands Hospital. As an esteemed lecturer at the University of Guyana School of Medicine, his exceptional teaching skills and vast knowledge in Obstetrics and Gynecology enriched the education of countless aspiring doctors. His lectures and workshops were known for their informativeness, engagement, and structure”, he said. (See letter on page 6.)
Former Minister of Health Dr Leslie Ramsammy also offered his condolences.
“Neville served Guyana as our foremost obstetrician and gynecologist for more than four decades. He was a teacher and contributed enormously to strengthening our maternal and child health services. He spearheaded the transformation of Woodlands Hospital to one of the most successful private hospitals in CARICOM. He was appointed by me as Chairman of the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee in 2009 and served in that capacity until 2020. Many impressive firsts were achieved at Woodlands. Guyana has lost a man of worth, one who made a difference”, he said.
President Ali also offered his condolences: “I offer my sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of former Managing Director of the Woodlands Hospital, Dr Neville Gobin, who passed away today. Dr. Gobin was a devoted Guyanese patriot who served the country’s medical field for decades. His selfless dedication to his work has left a significant void in the health sector. May his soul rest in peace”.
