News about the death of Rex Hubert Mc Kay, SC, a doyen in the legal fraternity, has dealt me a shocking blow. While I know he was shackled by old age and illness, I did not realize death was so near. As a young policeman, I had cause to be on the opposite side to him in Court. As a lawyer defending the accused, he pilloried me with questions and exposed weaknesses in the evidence presented. His questions posed in cross examination enriched my knowledge and helped to make me a better investigator. Once after our duel in Court had just ended, he invited me to his office at Croal Street in Georgetown and reviewed the gaps in the evidence. That was a learning experience for me.
I had the privilege to subsequently investigate the theft of bales of “Island in the Sun” patterned cloth from his bond. He was appreciative when I recovered the cloth and held the suspect. He, however, took the route of monetary settlement instead of criminal prosecution against the suspect. That added strength to our relationship. Rex Hubert McKay was a mentor who impacted my professional development. I offer my very sincere condolences to his family and friends in mourning, and hope it is well with his soul.
